Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada

Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada

Indigenous Peoples Day is a reminder that the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada is not limited to the past but is ongoing. The holiday aims to raise awareness of the issues that Indigenous peoples face in Canada and to celebrate our contributions to the country. It is also a call to action for all Canadians to support Indigenous communities and to work toward reconciliation.

History of Indigenous People Day

Indigenous Day is celebrated annually on June 21st in Canada. The holiday was first celebrated in 1996 an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the unique culture, heritage, and contributions of Indigenous peoples in Canada. In addition, it is also a day to acknowledge the ongoing struggles and injustices faced by Indigenous communities and to work towards reconciliation and healing.
Indigenous Peoples Day

The history of Indigenous Day in Canada dates back to 1982.  The National Indian Brotherhood (now known as the Assembly of First Nations) called for a national day to celebrate Indigenous cultures and contributions. This call was echoed by other Indigenous organizations and groups across Canada. In 1995, the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples recommended the creation of a national holiday to recognize Indigenous cultures and contributions. A year later, the Canadian government officially declared June 21st as National Aboriginal Day. Eventually, it  was renamed Indigenous Day in 2017.
